Tamale Teaching Hospital gives surgical training to housemen

Tamale, April 8, GNA – The Tamale Teaching Hospital has given basic surgical training skills to fourteen housemen to enhance their expertise in surgical operations.

Mr Gabriel Nii Ankrah, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the hospital, told the GNA in Tamale on Thursday that the programme which is the first of its kind at the hospital, was aimed at exposing the housemen to standard techniques as they prepare to perform various clinicals, as wells as propelling them to higher heights in their practice.

He said the housemen were taken through sessions such as theatre etiquette, instruments handling, knotting, handling suturing, abdominal incision and closure, haemostastis, dissection, handling bowels, handling vessels, handling traumatized tissues and plastering.

Mr Ankrah said the three-day training which took place in the hospital was supervised by three general surgeons, two obstetrics and gynecologist consultants and the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr. Ken Sagoe. He said the supervisors expressed the satisfaction that the training had equipped the housemen to meet a bench-mark of standard medical practice, saying that the use of tools from the Royal College of England had ensured strict compliance with standard clinical practice.

The PRO said the training would in future be replicated in some regional and district hospitals in the three northern regions. 8 April 10
