Tamale NGO commissions soap making centre

The Tuma Kavi Development Association (TKDA), Tamale based NGO on Thursday inaugurated a soap making centre at Yong, a community in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality meant to train local women groups to process soap.

The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) provided funds for the construction of the centre.

Mr Evans Sinkari, Programmes Manager of CCFC, said his outfit would continue to support its partners in the region to help deprived and less privileged communities overcome poverty and its effects.

He urged community members to join the Yong Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) groups to benefit from loans facilities to expand their businesses.

He said the goal of CCFC and its partners was to help improve the lives of deprived families and communities in northern Ghana through sustainable development projects and stressed the importance of the soap making centre at the Yong community.

Mr Alhassan Beyom, Tuma Kavi Development Association Programmes Co-ordinator, said the selection of the women group at Yong among other groups in the programme area was based on their performance and commitment to engage in businesses and to expand them.

Mrs Gifty Akosua Baka, Country Director of CCFC who inaugurated the project, stressed the need for women empowerment, which would enable them to participate actively in development and urged the Yong women’s group to work hard to help their families and other groups to grow.

She said CCFC would support the building of more of such vocation centres for the groups to make choices in areas they were interested and advised the women to eschew tendencies such as jealousy that would create divisions to derail their progress.

Mr Issah Osman, Business Development Officer of the Savelugu Municipal Rural Enterprise Programme, commended TKDA and CCFC for the laudable initiatives in the municipality and promised to work with them to achieve a common goal.
