Tamale Metropolis hit by acute water shortage

Tamale, May 26, GNA – The Tamale Metropolis has been hit by an acute water shortage, compelling residents to walk several kilometres in search of water.

The shortage has also interrupted business activities that rely on water for daily production and the company has started house-to-house delivery.

The problem comes less than two weeks after Mr Hanock Kwesi Bansah, the Northern Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company, had warned that the metropolis could face a major water problem if a component of the only existing pump sent for repairs in Kumasi did not arrive in time.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale, Mr Bansah said the water treatment plant could pump a maximum of 4.3 million gallons of water a day but because of the hitch, the company could only deliver 2.8 million gallons per day.

He said 10 million gallons of water was needed everyday to provide uninterrupted water supply to Tamale and its surrounding villages. The company will require about 65 million dollars for expansion works on the treatment plant to arrest the perennial water shortage in the metropolis.

He appealed to customers in the region to be patient and use water judiciously as the company was working around the clock to ensure clean, potable and uninterrupted water supply to Tamale and its environs.
