Tailors Association inaugurated at Saltpond

Saltpond, Sept. 1, GNA – Nana Kwa Abonko V, chief of Biriwa in the Central Region has said that the President’s Special Initiative on Garments calls for improved skill in the industry to enable Ghana to break into the export market.

He said this requires brilliant and innovative professionals who can produce high quality clothes for the international market. Inaugurating the Saltpond branch of the Ghana Tailors and Dressmakers Association at the weekend Nana Kwa Abonko dispelled the notion that tailoring and dressmaking are vocations for school dropouts. “The industry requires brilliant and innovative professionals to break into the international market,” he said.

Twelve apprentices made up of the eight females and four males graduated at the ceremony.

In a welcoming address, Mr Kingsley Eyiah, Central Regional Chairman of the Association appealed to district assemblies to give loans under the Poverty Reduction Fund to the members to enable them establish and expand their businesses.

Mr Vincent Biney Amissah, Mfantseman District Co-ordinator of Ghana Red Cross Society advised the graduates to make use of their skills to earn a decent living.

Mr Kofi Hayford Chairman of the Saltpond branch of the Association expressed concern about parents who abandon their children while they are under apprenticeship.

“Parents have a duty to care for their children until they graduate and get well established,” she reminded them. Nana Montuwaa, queen mother of Saltpond Upper Town, who presided appealed to members to be truthful to their customers and avoid being greedy.
