Tafo wants to be created into municipality

The chiefs and people of Tafo, Kumasi, have appealed to the government to consider making the area a municipality to accelerate the pace of development.

Nana Agyen Frimpong II, the Tafohene, said it had all it takes – population, land size and the economic resources to qualify for a municipality.

The area’s population is in excess of 75,000, has viable revenue sources – a vast public cemetery, two thriving markets and a light industrial area.

He said in spite of the huge revenue contribution to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, there was little to show and that the situation needed to change.

Nana Agyen Frimpong was speaking at a community durbar held to unveil a Development Planning Committee set up by the Traditional Council to look at ways of speeding up the progress of the area.

The 11-member committee is made up of representatives of the council, the Member of Parliament (MP), the Zongo chief, assembly member, council of churches, the business community and the transport associations.

It would have various sub-committees on finance, infrastructure, health, sanitation and environment, education, security, sports and entertainment.

Nana Agyen Frimpong said they were eager to receive their fair share of financial resources of their place for development.

Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei, the MP, presented four computers to the committee to enhance its operation and urged the members to work hard to improve the socio-economic conditions.

Alhaji Seidu Chibsah, the Zongo chief, urged the committee to move quickly to oversee removal of unauthorized structures that had turned the area into a big slum to restore its beauty.
