Kumasi, June 19, GNA – Individuals and organisations have been asked to support the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Appiah-Sakyi, Ashanti Regional Commander of the DOVVSU, who made the appeal, reminded Ghanaians that fighting crime is a shared responsibility. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Tafo-Pankrono Police DOVVSU, in Kumasi.
ASP Appiah-Sakyi said that since the establishment of the Unit 11 years ago, it has recorded over 20,000 cases of defilement, rape, assault and neglect of parental responsibility. He asked victims of domestic violence to report to the Unit or other security agencies, saying domestic violence could affect the psychological and physical conditions of victims. The Tafo-Pankrono District Police Commander, Superintendent Kwaku Buah, gave the assurance that the new Unit would work hard and provide adequate protection for women and children in the area.
