Swedru teachers protest against Single Spine Salary

Agona Swedru(C/R), March 4, GNA – About 200 Basic

School teachers in the Agona West Municipality on Thursday

staged a peaceful protest march through the principal streets

of Agona Swedru to register their displeasure against the

Single Spine Salary Structure. The protesters carried placards some of which read,

“Poisonous Single Spine, 93Professor do little”, 93Atta Why”,

“Atta must resign”, 93teachers are not happy” and 93Atta has

deceived us”. The three-hour protest march ended at the Ghana

Education Service (GES) offices where Mr Ransford Ogoe,

Secretary of the Agona Swedru Senior High School branch of

the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers

(NAGRAT) presented the resolution on behalf of the teachers. Mr Nelson Otu-Asamoah, Deputy Director of Education in

charge of Finance and Administration of the Agona West

Municipal Directorate of the GES, received the resolution on

behalf of Mr Obeng Ampadu, Agona West Municipal Director

of Education. Mr Otu-Asamoah assured the teachers that the resolution

would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters. The resolution stated that the 93teachers will not be able to

escort the students for the Independent day celebration on

Sunday March 6 if the mistakes in their salaries were not

corrected immediately”. It said the teachers would also embark on a sit down strike

pending concrete response from the government, adding that

they cannot invigilate the Basic Education Certificate

Examination (BECE) and West Africa Senior School

Certificate Examination (WASSCE)”.
