Swedish government building hostel for orphanage

Biadan (B/A) Feb. 21, GNA- The Swedish Government was building 1 billion multi-purpose hostel for the Children of World of Friends School and inmates of the Biadan orphanage at Biadan, near Berekum in Brong-Ahafo.

The project expected to be complete by the end of the year, would have a clinic, entertainment center, library, computer laboratory and conference room.

Dr. Nana Henneh Ababio, founder of the Orphanage, disclosed this to the GNA at a get-together, organized by the Regional Secretariat of the Ghana National Commission on Children (GNCC), for the inmates of the Orphanage at Biadan.

He said individuals and associations in Sweden have promised to donate clothing, food, teaching and learning materials to the Orphanage, and appealed to government and other public-spirited individuals and organizations to also support the facility.

Dr. Ababio expressed concern about the alarming rate of streetism among the youth and stressed the need for government to assist such people to become responsible citizens.

He said the Orphanage, established in 1994, with 20 children, now had 135 inmates and appealed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund to award scholarships to brilliant inmates to enable them to further their education.

Mr. Hammond Oppong Kwarteng, Regional Director of GNCC, advised the inmates to abstain from social vices such as pre-marital sex and drug abuse and instead take advantage of government’s educational policies to acquire knowledge and skills.

He advised parents to teach their children values and traditions of the country to enable them to be self-disciplined.

Nana Gyamfi Kumanini II, chief of Biadan, thanked the GNCC for its concern for the inmates and advised the children to concentrate on their studies and eschew social vices.
