SWDA assembly members boycott assembly sitting

Mampong (Ash), Sept 24, GNA – Assembly members from the Nsuta/Kwamang/Beposo constituency on Friday walked out of the Sekyere West District Assembly meeting at Asante-Mampong in protest against a statement alleged to have been made by President J.A. Kufuor.

The President was alleged to have promised that the District Chief Executive seat would be for the Mampong constituency of the Sekyere West District forever and not for the other constituency.

Mr Asante Gyeabour, government appointee who moved for the boycott, said the Nsuta/Kwamang/Beposo constituency had ceased to be part of the district until the President cleared the air on the allegation levelled against him.

Eugene Dwomoh, an assemblyman for Nwaadan electoral area in the Mampong constituency, was quoted to have said in a radio phone-in programme that the President gave the assurance where he (Dwomoh) and some elders of Mampong called on him (President) in Kumasi when he was there to attend the recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) congress.

Mr Thomas Edward Atakorah, the District Chief Executive and Nana Kofi Asante, the Presiding Member, prevailed on the incensed assembly members to rescind their decision for the assembly to investigate the matter but to no avail.

Mr Dwomoh, the centre of the controversy, was not present at the meeting neither could he be traced in his house to substantiate the allegation but the incensed members said they had in their possession the statement he made.
