Sustain Education on Re-denomination Exercise- ISD

Kongo, UE), July 4, GNA- The Information Service Directorate (ISD) on Wednesday appealed to Government to sustain the education of the re-denomination exercise for a while to enable more people to understand the currencies and become abreast with it. Mr Godfred Yormesu and Ms Kate Kabo, both Deputy Directors of a monitoring team from the ISD in Accra, made the suggestion in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after touring the three Northern Regions to assess the level of understanding on the new currencies.

They said only a few of the populace understood the exercise and that many of them were still grappling with the conversion of the currencies, and called for a sustained education on the exercise. The two officers were accompanied by the Upper East Regional information Officer, Mr Akwasi Amankwa, who also attributed the low level of understanding of the new currency to the illiteracy rate in most of the remote areas.

The Regional information officer expressed concern about the usage of only the Akan Language in the television adverts on the exercise and said efforts should be made to use most of the local languages too. Mr Amankwaa, however said, so far the campaign had been successful and that all the districts in the regions as well as the mosques and churches had been targetted. Meanwhile most of the people the GNA spoke to in the districts said now that the new currency has been put circulation most people would soon understand the conversion as time went on.
