Suspects in narcotic deals remanded in custody

Accra Oct. 1, GNA – Joseph N. W. Abueze, a self-employed was on Wednesday put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly possessing equipment and materials used in the distribution of narcotic drugs. David K. Anim, a shipping agent and an accomplice was also charged with abetment of crime.

Their pleas were not been taken and they were remanded in custody to re-appear on October 8 by the court, presided over by Mr Emmanuel Ankamah.

The accused persons and MacDonald Chimandas Vasnani, a Freight forwarder were arrested for allegedly importing 48 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs, hidden in sacks of rice imported into Ghana.

The facts of the case were that on September 27, this year, personnel from the Narcotic Control Board and the Police conducted a search into a house occupied by Abueze and Anim.

The search revealed that the occupants had in their possession equipments and materials used in the distribution of narcotic drugs. The team also found empty travelling bags, some of which had been prepared with false compartments and a pair of shoes, which soles had been scooped ready to be concealed with drugs.

The accused, who had been granted bail before another Court were re-arrested for further investigations.

During investigations, Abueze said the bags belonged to one Ibe, in Nigeria but Anim claimed he brought some bags containing personal belongings to Abueze in Ghana on two occasions from Holland. The bags and the equipments have been sent to a scientific laboratory for analytical examination.
