Sunyani, (B/A), Feb. 5, GNA-Tutors of Sunyani Secondary School have decided to shirk extra responsibilities to students and focus solely on teaching in the classroom.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, the visibly angry tutors deplored the monthly responsibility allowance of 10,000 cedis, which they described as “woefully insignificant and very insulting”. They declared their intention to undertake a peaceful demonstration to register their protest and urged the government to take immediate steps to address the issue. Mrs. Florence Boadi, tutor and a senior housemistress, stressed it was time something drastic was done to alleviate the plight of teachers in the country.
“We demand too much from the teacher and yet give out little to him or her”, she said.
she called for the abolition of co-curricula in the educational system that gave extra responsibilities to tutors.
Mr. Peter Daanu, another tutor, described the responsibility allowance as not encouraging and motivating enough.
Mrs. Victoria Konadu, a housemistress, cited an instance when a sick student was sent to hospital around 0200 hours, saying it was “a very inconvenient and tiresome experience”.
Mr. Eric Asuamah, a tutor, expressed concern about the health allowance of 25,000 cedis per teacher a year.
When contacted, Mr. Joseph Awuah, Headmaster of the school confirmed the action of the tutors but advised them to exercise restraint as the government was working to help alleviate their plight.
