Supreme Court waives penalty over bail bond

You can no longer be jailed in Ghana if you fail to produce a suspect you signed a bail bond for.

Ghana’s Supreme Court Tuesday ruled that failing to produce an accused person you signed a bail bond for must no longer constitute a criminal offence.

The court has consequently struck out a section of the law that stipulates a six- month jail term for such offenders.

A bail bond is a document in which a prisoner and one or more sureties guarantee that the prisoner will attend the court hearing of the charge against him if he is released on bail.
