The Supreme Court has nullified a bench warrant previously issued for the arrest of US-based Ghanaian journalist, Kevin Taylor, bringing an end to a long-standing legal directive that had sparked widespread debate about press freedom and judicial power.
The apex court’s ruling, delivered on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, followed a review application filed by Mr. Taylor’s legal team challenging the validity and constitutionality of the arrest order.
The warrant, issued by a lower court in 2020, stemmed from Taylor’s sharp criticisms of a judgment delivered by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour in a high-profile financial crime case.
In a 4-1 majority decision, the Supreme Court held that the warrant was unlawful.
The five-member panel was presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko.
Other members included Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu, who dissented, Justice Senyo Dzamefe; Justice Suurbaareh; and Justice Philip Bright Mensah.
The verdict marks the end of a five-year legal standoff.
