The Sunyani West Municipal Health Directorate has launched a breast cancer awareness campaign and embarked on health screening exercise, urging women to prioritize self-examination for early detection and treatment.
Rev. Esther Akua Kunadu Prempeh, Municipal Health Director, emphasized the importance of self-examination and early detection in improving treatment outcomes.
The campaign aims to educate the public on the causes, effects, and preventive measures of breast cancer.
Some participants were screened of breast cancer, BP, hypertension, body mass index, and other ailments.
She said the Health Directorate plans to conduct mass screenings at various gatherings to intensify breast cancer awareness and treatment in Sunyani municipal.
The municipal health director told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark fm that increasing breast cancer cases in Sunyani West is a call of worry. A situation needed urgent preventive measures.
Rev. Prempeh noted that early detection through mammography significantly improves treatment outcomes and calls for stakeholders’ support in providing a mammogram machine for the municipality.
Jovial Nyarko Ababio, Deputy Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer at Chiraa Government Hospital, highlighted lifestyle choices that contribute to breast cancer risk, including being overweight, consuming alcohol, physical inactivity, and certain hormone therapies or radiation treatments.
She shared common symptoms as a new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area with a change in breast size or shape.
Madam Jovial reveals possible changes in the nipple, such as inversion, discharge, or tenderness, changes in the skin, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering.
She encouraged women to visit health facilities for medical treatment.
