Sunyani lawyer and teacher granted bail

Sunyani, July 22, GNA- A Sunyani Magistrate’s court on Thursday granted five million cedis bail each to Nana Obiri Boahen, a Sunyani legal practitioner and Frank Kusi, a teacher, when they made their third appearance before it.

The lawyer is charged with abetment of crime whilst Kusi faces a charge of assault. They have pleaded not guilty and were each granted self-recognizance bail to re-appear on July 23.

DSP Alex Yartey Tawiah, told the court that Ms. Azumah Nsor, complainant in the case, accompanied by a witness, Ms. Amina Awudu, went to the house of Nana Obiri-Boahen to collect 17 million cedis allegedly given to him on her behalf as counsel in a civil case at a high court in Sunyani.

Nana Obiri-Boahen asked the two to leave his house but Nsor refused, insisting on collecting the money. DSP Tawiah said Nana Obiri-Boahen, became offended and ordered Kusi to beat her up, which he did.

Nsor reported the matter to the Sunyani district police, who issued her with a medical form to attend hospital and later arrested the two suspects.

DSP Tawiah said Nana Obiri-Boahen in his caution statement denied having ordered Kusi to beat the complainant but admitted that she and the witness were in his house on that day and he ordered them to leave. The prosecutor said Kusi also in his caution statement admitted that he assaulted the complainant but explained that it was Nsor who first slapped him. He denied dragging her on the ground.
