Deputy Director of Prisons Thompson Otsyokpo, the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East Regional Commander of the Service has called on philanthropists and the general public to form a partnership with them to support ongoing reform initiatives to increase internal revenue generation and rehabilitation of inmates.
The call follows some initiatives under the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees,” launched by the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie.
D.D.P Thompson Otsyokpo was addressing a gathering for the celebration of initiative under Think Prison 360 degrees and the launch of the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East edition of inter-stations sports festival at Sunyani Prison on Thursday.
According to the commander, the initiative, according to the Prisons Service, aims to rebrand the service through wealth creation, advocacy, welfare, agricultural mechanization, modernization, and industrialization.
He called on prison personnel to renew commitment to service, innovation, and teamwork, believing that, under the leadership of the Director-General, they can build a more secure, humane, and transformative prison system, one that reflects the best of who they are.
The Bono Regional Coordinating Director Mr. Nar-Ire Puobenyere David in his address on behalf of the regional minister, described the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees Initiative as both bold and every angle not narrowly through the lens of punishment or confinement, but a rehabilitation, reintegration, security and human dignity.
He pledged government commitment to ongoing reforms, including improved infrastructure and logistics, enhanced welfare of officers, increased skills-development programme, and the upward adjustment of inmate feeding from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00.
The chief of Penkwasi, Nana Kusi Boadum, announced at the event that the Paramount Chief of Sunyani has pledged Sunyani Manhene’s support to donate land, and building materials to support the Think Prison 360 degrees initiative.
