Suhum District Assembly deliberate on standard of education

Suhum (E/R), Feb.11, GNA- The District Chief Executive, Mr Michael Mensah, has expressed concern about the poor performance of schools in the area.

Speaking at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly at Suhum on Tuesday, he said the poor performance had relegated the district to the background in terms of education despite the Assembly’s efforts to raise education by providing structures, textbooks, furniture and library. Mr Mensah cited some of the factors that contributed to the poor performance to lack of Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in some schools to deliberate on issues affecting teachers and pupils.

The Assistant District Director of Education, Mr T.K. Akakpo, said the poor performance of the children in the school was attributed to the failure of some of the parents to monitor the activities of their children.

He said some of the parents allowed their children to attend wake-keepings, dances and other social activities while some withdrew their children from school to sell on market days and others also send their children to school without textbooks or fail to pay their fees. Mr Akakpo reminded them that education was a collective

responsibility of both parents and teachers and appealed to the Assembly to assist the GES to provide logistics like motorbike for the circuit officers to monitor schools.
