Submit 76k Togolese names for deletion – NDC dares NPP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to submit the names of the 76,286 foreigners on the voters’ register to the Electoral Commission (EC) for immediate deletion before the exhibition exercise ends.

This, according to the NDC, will give credence to the NPP’s claims in 2015, where its running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia alleged that the Electoral Register was inundated with nationals of Togo.

Dr. Bawumia then at a news conference disregarded the register as bogus suggesting in a presentation christened ‘The Case For A New Voters’ Register’ that it was “incurably flawed” with lingering disparities and not fit for credible elections.

Owing to these damning criticisms of the Electoral roll to be used in the upcoming elections, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC’s General Secretary called on the NPP to substantiate their apprehensions by providing over 70,000 names for removal.

Addressing a news conference Wednesday to expose the NPP’s “gross hypocrisy” over the proposed satellite transmission of results to a national tallying center, he said, “…the exhibition of the Ghana’s register which is to give opportunity for any such names to be deleted has been on-going for over two weeks now and we are yet to see the NPP providing the said names for deletion through due process.”

Notwithstanding the challenge thrown to the NPP, Asiedu Nketia did not shy from lambasting Dr. Bawumia for deceiving Ghanaians.

He said “…the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia together with their Campaign Manager Mr. Peter Mac Manu misled the whole Ghana and the International Community into believing that Ghana’s biometric voters Register was bloated with close to one million names of Togolese, Ivorians and Burkinabes.”

“…Indeed, the NPP Flag bearer himself repeated the false claim that there are over one million foreigners on the voters’ register and that Ghana’s Register has become an ECOWAS Register,” he added.
