Subiriso accident: 4 bodies identified

Only four of the 19 persons who perished in Saturday’s accident at Subiriso have been identified by relatives at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital.

The accident, which occurred at about 7:30pm, involved a Ford Transit minibus carrying 17 persons including the driver and his mate. It ran into a stationary articulated truck loaded with cement. The truck had developed a fault on the road and was being repaired by two mechanics, who were also killed in the accident.

Wassa Amenfi East District Chief Executive (DCE), Nicholas Amankwaa, made this known to Accra News Sunday August 7.

He said though persons had been trooping to the hospital’s mortuary to identify bodies, most corpses remained unclaimed and appealed to the public to help with the exercise to locate relatives of the deceased.

According to him, the police team set up camp near the scene of the accident on Saturday to avert another accident and towed away the damaged vehicle from the road the next day.

He blamed the accident on dangerous driving, mainly speeding, which he said had become a problem since the main road leading to Wassa Akropong, the district capital, was asphalted. However, he said police and the assembly had met with the leaders of the transport union in the area to advise them against speeding, a campaign they would step up.

“We’ve spoken with the drivers and we will continue to have regular engagements and educate them that a good driver is one who is able to make it to his destination alive not the one whose actions lead to the loss of precious lives,” he stated.
