‘Studying 10 subjects in class a torture’ – GNAT

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is calling for the number of subjects taught at the basic level to be reduce from 10 to 6 or lesser.

Speaking at the regional conference of the association in Accra, general secretary of GNAT is of the view that a national discussion on the reduction of subjects for students will go a long way to promote academic excellence in the country adding that studying more than 9 subjects is nothing but “academic torture”.

So far, it remains unsure if the proposal by the association will be considered by the education ministry as officials are yet to comment on them.

Meanwhile, officials of GNAT have also expressed diverse views with the sector minister who called for the duration of studies to be extended to 4 PM arguing that no scientific evidence shows that a shorter stay in class improves academic excellence.
