Students worry over alleged intimidation during exams

Bawku (U/E), April 20, GNA – Students taking part in this year’s BECE in the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region have described the attitude of some invigilators as “intimidating”. They claimed that apart from being thoroughly searched before entering the examination halls, their invigilators shout at them anytime they want to seek clarifications.

They also claimed that the posture of the invigilators were not encouraging for them to have sound minds to write their exams in a congenial atmosphere.

These sentiments were expressed by students who pleaded anonymity in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku on Monday. In all, there are 1,911 students writing the exams at the two main centres in the municipality. Out of the number, five failed to turn up for the exams.

At the Bawku Secondary School centre ‘A’, the supervisor, Mr. Ben Abugre discounted the claim and said that the students wanted to do things their own way, which is not allowed.

Mr. Abugre said under the exams regulations, they were not to have anything on them and that accounted for their thorough search. At the Bawku Technical Institute, an invigilator, Mr. Eric Aboyer also claimed that the intimidation charge by the students was false. He said the exams were being conducted in a free atmosphere devoid of tension or intimidation for the benefit of the students.
