Sunyani, July 20, GNA – The National Association of Brong-Ahafo Students Union (BASU) has completed a two-month voluntary teaching exercise in three districts of the region to help upgrade the standard of education in basic schools.
The districts were Jaman North, Jaman South and Asutifi.
Mr. Eric Yaw Amponsah, National President of the Union who briefed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Monday about the exercise, said 50 members of the Union, drawn from educational institutions in the region participated in the exercise.
The beneficiary schools in the Asutifi district were Obengkrom Local Authority, Kenyasi Number One Roman Catholic, Kodiwohia Local Authority and Denkakrom Local Authority.
Atuna Local Authority in Jaman North District was the only beneficiary school in the district.
Beneficiary schools in Jaman South were Bonakire Local Authority, Suma-Ahenkro Roman Catholic and Local Authority, Duadaso Numbers One and Two Local Authority and Roman Catholic Schools.
Mr. Amponsah said the teaching programme covered all the subjects being taught in basic schools.
He said alongside the teaching, the leadership of the Union also organised a reading competition for pupils of the beneficiary schools.
Twenty pupils, two from each school, were selected to attend the Union’s forthcoming 52nd Annual Congress in Goaso on August 2-7 for the reading stage of the competition and presentation of awards.
The BASU President commended the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and specially mentioned the Regional Minister, Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, for the support given the Union in both organisation and execution of the programme.
He expressed regret about the lukewarm attitude of some authorities of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in some parts of the three districts the exercise took place towards the leadership of the Union.
Mr Amponsah expressed the hope that similar programmes to be organised in other districts in the region would not encounter such problems.
He called on the entire citizenry of Brong-Ahafo Region to assist future programmes so members could adequately and voluntarily help educate children in the region.
