Hohoe(Volta Region) 11 Oct 1998 Success in educational pursuits depends on each student’s approach to studies and not on the glamour associated with the name or location of the school he or she attends, the Right Rev Japhet Yaw Ledo, Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church, Ghana, has said.
He therefore advised students to make the best use of facilities available to them to attain high academic and social goals.
Rev Ledo was speaking at the 37th Speech and Prize-giving day of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Secondary School (HEBSS) on October 10.
A science resource centre provided by government and a 25 million cedis girls dormitory provided by the Parent Teacher Association for the school were commissioned.
Rev Ledo asked the students to regard the problems in the school as a challenge which must rather urge them on to attain success and pledged the church’s continued support to the school.
The school, which was established in 1961, has a student population of 768 but with limited infrastructure.
A new five-classroomed block project for the school has been abandoned and some classes are now conducted in thatched classrooms.
Mr Kwesi Aboagye, deputy Volta regional minister, announced that the government has provided 220 million cedis under the 1999 Public Investment Programme (PIP) for the construction of an administration and library blocks for the school.
He advised the school authorities to be pragmatic in instilling discipline in the school but remain firm in cases of drug abuse.
The school obtained 91 per cent success in the 1997 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination and successfully represented the region in a number of national competitions.
Prizes were awarded to deserving students and members of staff. An appeal for funds yielded 3.5 million cedis. GRi
