Sekondi, W/R — TEN school children from the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis who participated in an educational exchange programme in the city of Boston in the United States of America are to benefit from a programme which encourages innovation in the study of mathematics as well as make the subject interesting.
The programme, which is being developed with the guidance of a mathematics educator in the United States, Mr Lawrence Cornvalius, will also enable students in junior secondary schools to approach mathematics education from a cultural perspective.
According to a press release from Mr Cornvalius, the programme will also strengthen the learning and research capabilities of children and assist them to link mathematics to economics, analytical reasoning and the concept of investments and saving in Ghana.
Mr Cornvalius noted that the programme, which is seeking donor funding, will further assist in integrating information and communication technology in Sekondi-Takoradi and the Western Region.
According to him, the programme is being developed on the initiative of Mr Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis, Mr Michael Ofori of the Fleet Bank in Bosto,n and Dr Renee Dankerling of the USA.
He said the programme is also expected to become part of a project for sustainable local capacity building and workforce development in the Western Region.
According to Mr Cornvalius, the pilot project will begin in April 2003 with seed capital from USAID Association Liaison Officer for University Co-oporation in Development.
He pointed out that the regional economic development aspect of the project will involve the University of Cape Coast and Suffolk University.
Mr Cornvalius commended the Boston Sekondi-Takoradi Sister City Association, led by Messrs Michael Ofori and Kofi Essien of Boston Private Bank and Trust, who were instrumental in developing the programme with Sekondi-Takoradi.
