Students refuse to give petition to Minister on Campus

Accra, Aug. 30, GNA – Students of State own universities on Monday refused to hand over their petition to the Minister of Education Youth and Sports, who had gone to the University of Ghana, Legon Campus to collect it.

The Sector Minister, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu and the Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, Ms Elizabeth Ohene had gone to collect a petition the students wanted to send to President John Agyekum Kufuor in order to save them the trouble of having to walk the about 14 kilometre-distance to the Castle, Osu.

Mr Baah-Wiredu told them that President Kufuor was currently on a four-day working visit to the Eastern Region.

The Student Leadership, however, insisted that they preferred to walk to the Castle as they had initially planned.

The students are protesting against increases in fees, which they described as too much for them to pay.

After their interaction with the Ministers of State and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Ofori-Sarpong at the Central Cafeteria of the University, the students embarked on their journey to the Castle under the protection of the Ghana Police.
