Students plead with teachers to call off strike

Accra, June 7, GNA – The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana (UG) on Tuesday deplored the continued impasse between the Government and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), who have been on strike for more than a month now. The SRC reiterated its call to the teachers to “reconsider their stance and go back to the classroom for the sake of the students while negotiations are ongoing.”

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Anuga Fortunate, SRC Press Secretary of the UG, said the stalemate was militating against the academic performance of students, who had been left on their own. It said NAGRAT had a legitimate concern, and it was unfortunate that Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Minister of Education and Sports should make remarks that appeared as if the teachers did not matter.

The SRC said there was the dire need for the Government to create congenial environment “needed to engender job satisfaction in the teaching profession, especially in this era of brain drain”. The SRC called on all stakeholders in education to come on board to help to find an amicable settlement to the problem.
