The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Monday commended President John Agyekum Kufuor for his personal effort at ensuring the reinstatement of nine students of the University of Cape Coast, who had been rusticated for their alleged involvement in a demonstration on the campus on March 31.

The NUGS, in a statement in Accra signed by its National President, Mr Edward Bawa also thanked the authorities of the University for “understanding the plea of the students and acting accordingly”.

The statement said: “NUGS extends its appreciation to the students representative councils of various institutions for the solidarity they showed throughout the negotiations.”

It appealed to the President to personally ensure that the grading system was properly reviewed since its introduction was responsible for the demonstration.

“We call on government and school authorities to, as much as possible, involve students in taking decisions that bother on their welfare since they are the end beneficiaries of whatever policies and decisions that are taken.”

It said they were committed to dialogue and were willing to assist government to solve the many problems facing the education sector.
