Koforidua, May 24, GNA- Two persons, suspected to be students of the St. Paul’s Technical School at Kukurantumi, alleged to be among a group of students who vandalised the property of Ofori Panyin Secondary School (OPASS) at Akim Tafo, have been arrested by the Police. They are Emmanuel Nyarko and Owusu Appiah who are assisting police in their investigations.
Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, Alhaji Hamidu Mahama told the press that at about 2300 hours on May 16, the police had information that some unspecified number of students from the St. Paul’s School and other schools had invaded OPASS wielding clubs and other offensive weapons.
He said police personnel were dispatched to the school but on reaching there and realising the intensity of the situation they had to fire eight rounds of warning shots to disperse the rioters who then took to their heels but they were pursued and the two suspects were arrested. Alhaji Mahama said after dispersing them, the police proceeded to the St Paul’s School in a bid to arrest those involved where a roll call conducted by the school authorities revealed that 30 of the students were absent.
Meanwhile, OPASS authorities reported that 216 louvre blades of a newly-built classroom block were damaged during the invasion. The authorities said the attack on OPASS was carried by a group of students of various institutions occupying a private hostel at Kukurantumi as a revenge to a colleague who reported to them of an earlier assault on him by some OPASS students, while he was leaving the campus to the hostel.
