Students appeal to government northerner as Vice-Chancellor of UDS

Bolgatanga, Oct 29, GNA – The Northern Students Union (NSU) has appealed to the government to appoint a person of northern descent to become the Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies. The President of NSU, Mr. Issahaku Arimeyaw Somo, stated this in an interview on Tuesday with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga during an award ceremony for northerners who had contributed to development of education in the area.

He said there were many northerners who had the qualification and capabilities and could meet the criteria for the Vice Chancellor position. Mr. Somo expressed disappointment about the habitual late release of school feeding grant to boarding schools in the north and noted that it was affecting their academic work since some schools could not be re-opened on time because of the late arrival of the feeding grants. He appealed to government to reverse the situation and ensure that the grant was always released on time.

Mr. Somo said NSU was committed to championing the cause of northern students and the development agenda of the north. Mr. Somo expressed regret about the conflict situation in Bawku and said it was disturbing that despite the efforts made by the Government and stakeholders to bring peace to the area, much still had to be done.
