Accra, April 30, GNA – Students of the University of Ghana, Accra City Campus at the weekend called on government to initiate concrete measures to create jobs for students coming on to the job market. “Peace is good. Free speech is lovely but nobody eats them. We need more than these. Provide us hope and opportunities Mr. President. Apart from the high rate of fees the student of the University of Ghana, Accra City Campus and many others struggle to find jobs on the job market.” A May Day statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Francis Kwaidoo, SRC president-elect at the City Campus, said the take-home pay of workers unfortunately could not take them home and urged government to seriously tackle this. He noted that the policy of full cost recovery in tertiary institutions was hurting workers who want to upgrade their level of education since most workers could not afford the high cost which has left those who want to upgrade themselves abandoning the courses at midstream.
“Our propensity to better our education to acquire capacity for national development is becoming too expensive.” The statement said the standard of living of most workers have seen some decline and called on the President to halt this and also arrest the decline of local industries like the poultry and garment sectors. The statement said the drive for foreign investment would come to nothing if government does not pay attention to the issue of development of the country’s labour force.
The statement however, expressed confident in government to put into practice mechanisms to restore this backward trends, adding that next year’s May Day would show greater positive national results for workers.
