Student wins Newmont Excellence Award

A fourth year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has won the 2014/2015 Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF)/Liebherr Excellence Scholarship Award.

For her prize, Beatrice Obeng Konama, a resident at Gyedu, a mine take community in the Ahafo Project of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) in Asutifi North District received GH¢ 15,000.00 to support her studies.

The scholarship is a partnership between NADeF and Libherr Mining Limited, and covers academic, user fees, accommodation, stipend and other allowances for books.

According to a statement signed by Ms Sabina Adu-Wusu, Communication Officer of NADeF, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the scholarship is designed for brilliant science students in tertiary institutions in the 10 Ahafo mine-take communities.

NADeF was established in May 2008 as a mechanism to manage NGGL Ahafo mine’s sustainable community development to its host communities through seven areas including health, cultural heritage, human resource development, social infrastructure, sports and economic empowerment.

The statement reiterated NADeF commitment to improving the human resource base of the local people and entreated other students to learn hard to benefit.
