Student remanded for theft

Mankranso (Ash), Jan. 28, GNA – A magistrate’s court at Mankranso on Tuesday remanded a 17-year-old student for stealing various sums of money totalling over nine million cedis at Pokukrom and Kwamekyemkrom, all in the Ahafo-Ano South District of Ashanti.

Perpetual Kyerewaah pleaded guilty to the charge and will re-appear on February 8.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Edwin Dei-Offei told the court that Kyerewaah was a second-year General Arts student of the Mpasatia Secondary/Technical School in the Atwima-Mponua District but resided at Atwima-Koforidua.

He said on January 10, this year, the accused broke into the rooms of four farmers at Pokukrom and stole about eight million cedis from the rooms on separate occasions.

Inspector Dei-Offei said on January 19, this year, Kyerewaah again broke into the rooms of two farmers, a driver and a teacher, all at Kwamekyemkrom and stole various sums of money from their rooms totalling one million cedis.

He said one of the victims, Janet Kwakye got home and realised that her padlock had been broken and therefore raised the alarm and suspected the act to have been committed by Kyerewaah.

Inspector Dei-Offei said following this suspicion, the accused was arrested and handed over to the Pokukrom police where the accused admitted during interrogation that she committed the crime and showed them an iron rod which she claimed was the tool she used in the operation.

During a search, he said, an amount of 154,000 cedis was found hidden under her pants while 255,000 cedis was found in her pocket.
