Student leader calls for better service conditions for teachers

Mr. Kofi Abrefa, President of the Tertiary Student Confederation of the University of Education, Winneba, has observed that the future of every nation depends on the development of its youth.

He said education should be the key interest of any government in its attempt to create a human resource base.

Mr. Abrefa, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Asuom on Saturday, said under the current administration, students had suffered greatly from the government’s inability to pay adequate remuneration to teachers leading to strike actions.

He said the strike actions had caused a lot of harm to the students, affecting the academic calendar especially at the tertiary level.

Mr. Abrefa noted that the conditions of service of teachers had made the teaching profession unattractive to the extent that “pupils in basic schools, when asked about their future careers, do not mention teaching because they could see the dissatisfaction and frustration on the faces of their teacher’s.”**
