Student killed, other injured in car crash

A student of the College of Agriculture of University of Education, Winneba, was killed whilst a number of passengers sustained serious injuries when a taxi collided head on with a bus at Ninting on the Kumasi-Asante-Mampong highway.

The deceased was identified as Peter Kwabena Antwi.

The injured persons are receiving treatment at the Mampong Government Hospital.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Benjamin Kwadwo Gyasi, Asante-Mampong Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit confirmed the accident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Mampong.

He said the bus driven by Daniel Mensah was heading towards Kumasi from Mampong whilst the taxi was from the opposite direction.

The brakes of the bus malfunctioned and to avoid running into an articulated truck that was ahead of him, Mensah veered off into the other lane and in the process crashed the bus into the taxi.

Antwi, who was occupying the front passenger seat died instantly while other passengers in the two vehicles received cuts and broken bones.

DSP Gyasi said Mensah has been remanded into police custody to allow for further investigations.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased student had been deposited at the Asante-Mampong Government hospital’s mortuary.**
