Student in court for allegedly defrauding Minister

Sunyani (B/A), June 22, GNA – Owusu Agryemang, an-18 year-old final student of the Drobo Secondary School in the Jaman South District of Brong Ahafo has been granted 10 million cedis bail by a circuit court at Fiapre, near Sunyani for defrauding a Minister of three million cedis. Agyemang pleaded not guilty to a charge of defrauding and was ordered to reappear on July 7.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Tei Boison told the court presided by Mr John Owusu that on April 2 this year the accused disguised his voice and called Ms Anna Nyamekye, MP for Jaman South and Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture on phone.

He said the accused introduced himself as the Commissioner of Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and asked the Deputy Minister to give the amount to his son at the Drobo Secondary School. Chief Inspector Boison said Ms Nyamekye obliged and a week later the money was sent to the accused in school through Nana Drobohene. He said the Deputy Minister later called on Agyemang in school to find out if he got the money to, which he confirmed having received it from Nana Drobohene in the presence of the Minister’s driver and bodyguard.

Chief Inspector Boison said Ms Nyamekye on May 10 this year read a fraud story involving the accused in the media and realised that she had also fallen victim to the accused and reported the matter to the police.
