Student fined for riding without helmet

Wa, July 17, GNA – A 33 year-old level 400 student of the University for Development studies at Wa has been fined GH(3,000 (30 million cedis) for riding a motorbike without wearing a crash helmet and not possessing a driving license.

Police Sergeant Gabriel Nanewortor, prosecuting, told the court that on July 12, 2007, a team of policemen from the regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) arrested the accused for riding a Savvy 110 motorbike with registration number UW 2044 X without wearing a crash helmet and not possessing a driving license.

The accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of GH(1,200 (12 million cedis) or in default nine months’ imprisonment on the first count and GH(3,000 (30 million cedis) or in default 12 months’ imprisonment on the second count. The sentences are to run concurrently.
