Student dies, eight on admission after “waakye” meal

Tema, June 06- GNA – One student has died and eight others, including a female teacher of First Star Academy, a private school at Tema are on admission at various hospitals after allegedly eating “waakye” sold on the school compound last Friday.

The victims, including a Nursery teacher, Madam Davidam Damson were rushed to the Lucida, Bengali, Narh-Bita and Port Clinics all in Tema on Friday night with vomiting and diarrhoea where they are still on admission responding to treatment.

A source at the school told newsmen on Tuesday that the condition of the JSS one student, Master Enoch Antwi, became serious and was rushed to the Tema General Hospital where he died.

His body has since been deposited at the morgue, pending autopsy.

The source said the victims bought and ate the “waakye” when they reported for school on the fateful day and had the reaction in the night, adding that, incidentally the seller had not set foot on the school compound to sell since then.

It expressed surprise at the turn of events because such incident has never occurred at the school ever since the woman started selling “waakye” on the compound over two years but could not explain why she has vanished.

The source however, indicated that occasionally, officials of the Environmental Health Department visit the school to inspect meals prepared by the sellers.

The proprietress of the school could not be reached for her comments on the incident as newsmen who went to the school were told she had gone to visit the victims at the various hospitals.
