Striking construction workers call off industrial action

Kumasi, Sept. 15, GNA – Striking workers of China Geo Engineering Corporation, the Contractors working on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital-Abuakwa dual carriageway, have called off their industrial action.

The workers downed their tools to press for better conditions of service. A press release signed by Xiao Shaochao, Executive Project Manager, said there was now calm, as the Management has positively responded to all demands made on them. These included a 20-per cent rise in salaries, appointment letters, re-imbursement of medical expenses and paying salaries through the banks.

The release said this was the outcome of a meeting held at the Ashanti Regional Labour Office and attended by the Regional and Kumasi Metropolitan Labour Officers, Representatives of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Management of the Corporation. It pledged the resolve of the Management of the Chinese Company to pursue an open door policy in its day-to-day dealings with the workers. The release therefore urged calm and understanding, to promote industrial harmony for smooth implementation of the road project. The construction of the dual carriageway was awarded to the Chinese Contractors in the year 2007.

Its successful completion would tremendously ease traffic congestion on this important road corridor that links Kumasi with Brong-Ahafo and the Western Regions. 15 Sept. 09
