Strike is not politically motivated – Teacher unions

The Teacher unions have brushed off claims by a member of the governing party’s legal team that their current strike is politically motivated.

David Annan told Radio XYZ’s Current Affairs Programme ‘The Analyst’ on Saturday that the Teachers’ strike is a blackmail borne out of political mischief.

But the National Chairman of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union, Peter Lumor in an interview with XYZ News said the teachers and TEWU members are not prosecuting any political agenda.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Peter Korda also echoed similar sentiments by Mr. Lumor saying all they are fighting for is to be treated fairly.

Mr. Annan also suggested that the teachers be captured under the essential services category as a way of preventing them from going on strike.

But Labour expert Austin Gamey says that won’t help matters in anyway.

“It doesn’t really matter whether you put the teachers or not I don’t think it matters if you out them there.

“There is a high level of indiscipline throughout the whole nation; the employers do not have the capacity to discipline people, supervision is very poor because we don’t have proper appraisal systems in place…so people are misbehaving…lazy workers and hard workers are paid the same amount of money,” Mr. Gamey said.
