Streetism, a major problem – Nanbigne

Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – A research fellow at the Department of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, Mr. Edward Nanbigne has called for all hands on deck in finding a solution to the problem of streetism.

Mr. Nanbigne expressed these concerns when he had an interaction with some students at the university.

On the move being made by some groups and individuals to rid the streets of children, Mr. Nanbigne commended non-governmental organisations, which were at the forefront of that move. However, he emphasised that the assistance from those quarters was not good enough.

He said after the NGOs had trained some of the street girls in batik tie and dye making, they send them to their home towns and villages to develop the trade but markets for these products were virtually non-existence at such places. Mr. Nanbigne therefore, suggested that before any such assistance was offered, the sponsors must ensure that market would be provided for their products.

He stated that it would be dangerous for any persons to stay unconcerned about the problem of streetism. He said that the children on the streets are like weeds, which grow among crops, if they are not uprooted early they grow to compete with the crops for space and nutrients in the soil.

Mr. Nanbigne also advised parents to produce the number of children they can effectively care for.
