The Minister for Railways Development, Hon. Joe Ghartey, has sounded a word of caution to all railways workers suspected to be involved in the selling of railway lands to private developers to immediately put an end to it.
Offenders when caught, he noted, will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
“Let me sound this note of caution that all railway workers who are selling the lands that we are coming to you and it is better to confess your sins and then we move forward. Because when the date passes, we shall take the necessary steps that you may not like them too much,” he noted.
He added “We have reached a stage where people are not willing to allow lawlessness to continue. Enough is enough.”
Hon. Joe Ghartey, who is also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Esikado/Ketan made this observation, Tuesday, when he inspected some rail lines along the Eastern Corridor rail network to get first hand information over the status of those rail lines.
The occasion was also used to commiserate with the bereaved family of a pedestrian who was killed by a train last Sunday, June 4, 2017.
Commenting further, he said the government is looking at the regulatory framework governing the railway sector and would soon set up a regulation body that would be looking at safety.
The Ghana Railway Development Authority, he noted, would be divided into two where one section would be tasked to look at the development of safety and the other would be in charge of regulation.
“We are almost finished with the documentation to take to Cabinet and I am sure we will get their support and shall soon start stakeholder discussions so that the people can express their views,” he posited.
