Stop portraying Homowo as fetish – Pastors told

Nene Kanor Atiapa III, Acting President of the Ningo Traditional Council, has said that there was nothing fetish about the Homowo festival of the Ga-Dangbe people.

He said the festival is about celebrating the rich tradition, custom and culture of the people for abundance of food while using it for family reunion after sojourning in foreign lands.

The Acting President therefore called on pastors to put an end to the notion of Homowo being fetish and that it must be preserved for generations unborn.

Nene Atiapa was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview ahead of the Homomo festival of the chiefs and people of Ningo, which comes off on Tuesday, August 26.

He said the theme for the festival is: “Education of the Youth, Tool for Our Future Development.”

Nene Atiapa advocated for cultural drumming during funerals and traditional celebrations instead of spinning of music, to maintain the peoples’ bond with their ancestors.

Nene Atiapa said the main focus for this year’s celebration was to mobilise funds for the rehabilitation of the Police quarters and the construction of a community centre.

He said for 11 years now, water supply has been a problem for the people in the area and appealed to government for assistance.
