Stop harassing NDC MPs – Speaker directs IGP

The Speaker of Parliament has directed that the Members of Parliament whose homes were raided at dawn in connection with the AMERI deal should be properly treated devoid of any harassment.

This came to bare today when both the minority and majority leaders of the House called on the speaker alerting him on a court warrant that was left in the homes of the MPs in question to appear before the police on Monday for questioning.

The leaders pleaded with Speaker to use his powers to withdraw the police warrant so the MPs can come to the House on Monday since parliament will have to sit on Monday to consider the mid year budget review.

It was to this end that the Speaker directed the police department to take cognizance of the correct procedure in inviting MPs to police station as enshrined in the constitution in order to ensure that their rights as Honourable Members of Parliament is protected.

Meanwhile, the Minority described the recent dawn raids on Members of Parliament by the Police as an affront to the dignity of parliament.

Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak contends that eventhough the Minority is willing to co-operate with government, the recent dawn invasion of privacy of MPs is not only a threat but a cause of panic.

Addressing the House, the Minority chief whip Muntaka Mubarak called on the speaker to act in protection of MPs.

Within the past week, three NDC MPs have had their homes raided over the controversial AMERI power deal.
