The strong stench that emanates from the Lavender Hill will by next week be a thing of the past as the anaerobic digesters built to treat human waste into organic waste nears completion.
The project when completed will separate solid waste from liquid.
Water derived from the separation process will then go into the Korle Lagoon and the solid waste will be used for fertilizer production.
The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije who paid a working visit to the site on Monday, stated that “The process that has been put in place is to ensure a scientific way of disposing our liquid waste. All the 150 trucks that usually will come to the beach to empty into the ocean, our goal is to eliminate that, keep a cleaner ocean and maintain a cleaner environment.”
Six digesters have since been mounted and the project is likely to be opened to the public within a week.
Mr. Vanderpuije also toured the ongoing Millennium School Projects in Accra.
He expressed satisfaction at the progress of work so far but called on the contractors to ensure they deliver on schedule.
