Steel bender before court for robbing police man

A 22-year old steel bender, Ekow Yaw Hans, was on Thursday arraigned before a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for allegedly robbing a police officer of his mobile phones and GH¢130.00 cash.

He is facing three counts of conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery, carrying offensive weapon and robbery.

His plea was not taken and has been remanded into police custody to reappear on Thursday, May 31.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Anku told the court presided over by Mrs. Florence Kai Otu, that, Hans lives at Kotokuraba a suburb of Cape Coast whilst the victim General Lance Corporal Abednego Sabi is based at Ajumako in the Central Region.

He said on Sunday, May 13, at about 2200hrs, Mr. Sabi returned from Ajumako and went to Kingsway, a suburb of Cape Coast to withdraw money from the Prudential Bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

He said Mr. Sabi who withdrew GH¢150.00, spent GH¢20, leaving him with GH¢130 after which he walked from London Bridge towards Tantri in search of a taxi.

Chief Inspector Anku said on reaching Sweet Gardens, near Tantri, Hans together with another accomplice (now at large) approached Mr. Sabi, who was in mufti, shouted at him and said “hey where from you, don’t you know that this town is ours”?

He said they then pulled out a pair of scissors and threatened their victim who had then been gripped with fear but was calm.

According to the prosecution, Hans and his accomplice then searched the police officer from head to toe and collected his Techno and Samsung mobile phones as well as the cash of GH¢130 from his wallet.

The Prosecutor said upon a further search of Mr Sabi’s wallet, they saw his Police Identity card which prompted them to take to their heels, leaving behind the techno phone.

He said Mr. Sabi then rushed to the Central Regional Police Headquarters and reported the incident leading to the arrest of Hans the following day at about 2100hrs at Hacienda in Cape Coast. The stolen Samsung phone was found on him.

Meanwhile, a bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of Hans’ accomplice, only known as Scallo.**
