Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency and Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has urged caution against calls for a state of emergency to combat illegal mining in Ghana, stressing that the government’s current measures are effective and showing results.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Gbande highlighted the significant progress made in tackling illegal mining, particularly in reclaiming forest reserves and conducting targeted military operations. He called for patience and support from the public to reinforce ongoing efforts.
“We shouldn’t be so quick to call for a state of emergency. This isn’t a decision you impose casually. Forest reserves are now being protected, military interventions are precise, and reclamation efforts are visible,” he stated.
Mr. Gbande also emphasized improvements in institutional performance, pointing out that responsible agencies are operating more efficiently. He linked economic stability, including the cedi’s improvement, to reforms in gold regulation.
Lauding the government’s dedication, he said, “The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Minister for the Interior have shown unprecedented resolve. Offenders are being arrested and extradited. The message is clear: no one involved in illegal mining will escape justice.”
He also called on Ghanaians to play their part by exposing individuals supporting illegal mining, stressing that resolving the issue requires collective effort and strategic management.
“This is a matter we must handle with tact, not rush into drastic decisions,” he concluded, urging citizens to trust and support the ongoing initiatives rather than push for emergency measures.
