Standards Board To Phase Out Imperial Measuring Units

Accra, Aug. 25, – The Ghana Standards Board (GSB) is to hasten the phasing out of all petroleum pumps operating on the imperial measurement units. ”The weights and measures decree (NRCD 326 ) of 1975, set in motion the use of the metric system and GSB thinks it is about time the petroleum marketing sector modernized.” Mr Nimo Ahinkorah, a Director of the GSB in charge of weights and measurement, said this when he addressed 20 filling station pump mechanics attending a two-day workshop on legal and technical aspects of weights and measurement in Accra today. The workshop, sponsored by the GSB, is the second in a series of workshops packaged for the petroleum marketing sector this year. Mr Ahinkorah urged the mechanics to be conversant with the provisions of the decree since any contravention could land them in jail. ”We are aware of the numerous tricks you employ to outwit your customers. We think you should know all about the law and set the standards to avoid trouble.” He said GSB is strengthening its monitoring teams to ensure full compliance with the law. The Rev. Dr Emmanuel Kwesi Marfo, Executive Director of the GSB, advised them to take the workshop seriously to merit certification which would protect their image with the board. He asked them to contribute in any way possible towards the success of the country’s metric weights and measurement drive.
