St. Ignatius Catholic Church dedicated

The Most Reverend Mathias Kobina Nketsiah, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast and the Apostolic Administrator of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese of the Catholic Church on Sunday called on Christians to eschew wrong doings and prepare themselves for their heavenly duties.

He said holiness must therefore be part of every Christian in order to earn the favour as well as growing from glory to glory.

The Apostolic Administrator said this at the dedication of the Saint Ignatius Catholic Church at the Airforce Base, theme: “Now I have built a majestic temple for you…” in Takoradi in the Western Region.

The Ghc600, 000 worth structure was built over a nine-year period with contributions from church members and other donors.

Though the first mass was celebrated in November 28, 1971, the church did not have a permanent place of worship for Catholic military faithful at that time.

The movement of the 1st Battalion from Alcourt Lines near Takoradi Harbour to its present place at Myhaoung Barracks, Apremdo, therefore marked the beginning of the Church in Takoradi.

After this movement, a new regiment, the 6th Battalion, occupied the old barracks at the Alcourt Lines. Meanwhile, the new Airforce station had also been completed and occupied.

These reasons motivated the military Catholics to build a church of their own.

The foundation stone was laid in June 5, 2005 when the Logistics Department of the Ministry of Defense gave the land around the Airforce Base for the church building.
