St. Anthony Hospital seeks government intervention to run Midwifery School

Authorities of St. Anthony Hospital at Dzodze and some chiefs of the area on Thursday appealed to government to help the Diocesan Secretariat to secure the necessary certificate to run a midwifery school.

Though the Secretariat had built classrooms, dormitories, demonstration rooms, dining hall and a library, the facilities have not been used for almost a year now.

This is because the Nurses and Midwifery Council has refused to issue a certificate for the institution to operate, Mr. Brown Akoto, Administrator of the Hospital said.

“We have confidence in this government and we would be happy if it can leave this important mark in Dzodze”.

Mr Akoto said the Diocesan Secretariat employed tutors in anticipation of securing certificate for the Institution to run, adding that some foreign donors were also ready to invest in the Institution and awaiting the issuance of certificate.

He said such a midwifery school would improve maternal health in the five neighboring districts in the southern part of the Volta Region.

“Our maternal and infant morbidity is quite high and we know in the next two to three years, most mid-wives would phase out, so this institution will help to train new midwives to replace those who are leaving,” he said.**
